Amazing Kidneys

Your kidneys are amazing organs that are every bit as important as your lungs and your heart in doing the work of keeping you alive and well.
One of the main jobs of the kidneys is to filter waste out of your blood. When your blood delivers nutrients to your body, chemical reactions in your cells occur that leave behind some materials your body does not need. The job of your kidneys is to filter that material out of your blood, all day, every day.

There are also many excellent sources of kidney related information on the Internet.  Here are a few:

•    www.kidneyschool.org All the basics in one place! Learn about how kidneys work, dialysis, transplant, and how to stay healthy with kidney disease.
•    www.kidney.org The website of the National Kidney Foundation; lots of patient education.
•    www.homedialysis.org A great source of information on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis. Articles, patient stories, message boards, research, and more.
•    www.nephron.com A clearinghouse for kidney-related news and research. Also has an eGFR calculator, so if you know your creatinine number, you can figure out your eGFR.
•    www.rsnhope.org An organization of patients with resources for education, support and encouragement.
•    www.lifeoptions.org Education for patients on how to live long and live well with kidney disease.
•    www.aakp.org The website of the American Association of Kidney Patients; patient educational resources.
•    www.heart.org The website of the American Heart Association; information on keeping your heart healthy.
•    www.diabetes.org The website of the American Diabetes Association; many resources for diabetics
•    http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ On this government site, you can search for the nutrient values for most foods, including calories, fat, potassium and phosphorus.
